RF Mixer Enhancing BOFDA Sensing Resolution
The primary objective of the project was to design and build a high-performance FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array)-based DSP (Digital Signal Processing) modulator and a high-frequency RF (Radio Frequency) mixer to enhance the resolution of a distributed fibre-optic sensing device utilizing BOFDA (Brillouin Optical Frequency Domain Analysis) technology. The proposed system aimed to improve the overall performance of the device by increasing its spatial resolution and sensitivity.
The FPGA-based DSP modulator was employed to generate precise modulation waveforms with minimal distortion, facilitating optimal signal processing for accurate measurements. The high-frequency RF mixer was responsible for the upconversion and downconversion of the optical signals, optimizing the interrogation process. Integrating these components into the BOFDA sensing system resulted in a highly optimized optical interrogator.
The successful implementation of this project paved the way for more versatile and robust fibre-optic sensing solutions, offering significant benefits for industries such as structural health monitoring, oil and gas, and environmental monitoring.
